Chelsey Klosterman

About

About

Chelsey Klosterman is a student at Missouri State University working towards a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 3D Studies with an emphasis in Ceramics and Bachelor of Science in Education. In Elementary school, Chelsey was introduced to the power of art by her art teacher. She saw this teacher as a role model and aimed to follow in her footsteps. To this day, Chelsey is passionate about the impact art can make on a child’s life and hopes to share her passion with as many young students as she can. Her work focuses greatly on family and the unexpected joys in life. She creates sculptural ceramic work with botanical imagery out of white porcelain clay to represent growth and adaptation to the events in life that surprise us the most. She also enjoys the functionality of ceramics and often creates functional forms such as platters, serving bowls, and mugs. After graduation, Chelsey plans to begin teaching at the Elementary school level as well as selling her functional work.

Artist Statement

My work expresses the idea that life changes in ways we could have never imagined. These unexpected events make you who you are and can become the best and most rewarding parts of your life. The last several months have come with a great amount of growth and life changes. In September 2019 I found out I was pregnant with my son and while this was unexpected, his arrival on April 24th was the best moment of my life. I have learned to grow each day and accept the things that I have no control of. I have learned to move past the opinions and judgments of others and look to my future with pride, hope, and anticipation. With these changes, I feel that I have found my voice through my art and express my thoughts through the creation of porcelain clay flowers. In nature I feel a sense of peace and serenity in my life while flowers remind me of my family and that each day we are learning, growing, and adapting to our surroundings. When looking at a flower, you’ll see cracks, tears, and discoloration, but each petal is unique and delicate, reminding me that it is okay to not be perfect or look perfect in the eyes of others.

Through this journey of growing my family, I have had to overcome the opinions of others which was a difficult concept for me to accept. Society has created a framework for the order events in your life should occur: love, marriage, then starting a family. If you add the completion of college into that timeline, it comes before the rest. In reality, life happens in different ways for everyone, and you cannot compare the order of events in your life to the lives of others. In this collection of work, I depict flowers and leaves growing despite a variety of obstacles such as barbed wire, wooden frames, and cages. These obstacles represent the chaos in our lives that we must accept and appreciate in order to keep moving forward and growing.

In my work, I utilize hand building techniques to create each flower to ensure each element of the piece is unique. I pinch the clay to form each petal and bring them all together to create an abundance of delicate flowers. I glaze my work with a semi-translucent white glaze to keep intact the pure white color of the clay body to represent the purity of new life and a fresh start. Each piece represents the journey of finding my happiness and breaking through the constraints of societal norms to embrace the life I am living. Through the creation of this collection of work, I have had the ability to gain acceptance of the new path my life is taking and the ability to have pride in all I have overcome and accomplished.
